Julia Holter Interactive Album & Components

December 2018

For the final project I created a plexiglass vinyl album casing that comes with awhole sensory experience because of its multiple components. The main underlying concept that I wanted to address in all of my album pieces was the notion that Julia Holter’s album denotes this duality of beauty and complexity. Her music jumps from sad synths to blowing choirs affecting everyone uniquely. Throughout all of my components I wanted to have this consistent aesthetic consisting of simple lines and rectangles that are dimensionally and materially ornate.

For the album cover I wanted to push away from the idea of a sleeve or pouch that holds the vinyl rather create a see-through container that encompasses it inside. I created a plexiglass container that holds the vinyl inside. The base has a separate enclosed element that displays various pulled strings that the listener has the ability to play music on. They are strategically placed to mimic a J and H which are her initials. For my poster design I wanted it to be interactive and fun. It focuses on a pull tag concept that reveals the album and artists name. The centre eye also spins for a tactile and unique element. The wearable item I chose to explore were various brooches laser cut from clear plexiglass. Each are based on some of her musics notes.
